The Indian AI market is projected to grow at 25-35% CAGR through 2027 and this has triggered the need for relevant AI skills in the market. This study presents a point of view on planning current and future AI roles within the larger organizational structure, approaches to develop requisite skills in India while learning from such global endeavors, and recommendations for nation-wide AI skilling interventions.

Indian AI talent pool is expected to grow from 600k – 650k to over 1.25 Mn by 2027, at a 15% CAGR.
Indian AI market is expected to grow at a rate of 25% – 35% during this time, potentially signalling a demand-supply gap in the talent pool.
With Gen AI emergence, majority Indian IT services companies have trained large segments of their workforce on base Gen AI skills.

Tech providers have also partnered with many state and central government missions on AI skilling.
MeitY has planned several interventions to develop an AI-ready talent pool.
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has also collaborated with tech companies to empower India’s workforce.

Providers are rethinking basic to advanced AI skills and domain-specific expertise.
Foundational skills such as problem-solving capabilities, critical thinking and social skills are also in focus.
Leading players are thinking tiered skilling across various levels based on relevance in time, AI usage, and technical expertise level of an employee.
Skilling interventions with the collaborative effort of industry, governments, and academia can be planned at a large scale.

Europe, USA, Aouth Korea, Finland, Singapore, countries in the Middle East are all developing holistic programs to skill their workforce and citizens
To advance India’s AI skilling, focus has to be on upskilling through active industry-academia collaboration, specialized training programs, online coursework, and dedicated data and AI labs across the country
